Denver's first Top 10 hit as a solo artist after a brief period of performing with small folk-based bands included Take Me Home Country Roads co-written with Bill Danoff. Danoff wrote the song with Johnny Cash in mind but when Denver was introduced to an earlier version it was clear that the track could become an instant hit. After performing the song in Washington D.C. to a large audience, Denver recorded it just days afterward.
